The Morrison Community Hospital Foundation is pleased to announce that the Morrison Community Garden and “Little Sprouts” program will be coming to Morrison, IL this spring! The community has embraced the project and has joined together to begin developing the program. A community kick off day will be scheduled for Saturday, May 8th. The day will be creatively known as “Plant the Town”. A play on words from Morrison’s highly successful “Paint the Town” event held in the fall, created in 1994, by CAPA.
The new Morrison Community Garden will be located at French Creek Park in Morrison. The location was chosen for many beneficial reasons. The north side of the park is out of the 100 year flood plain, it is a family oriented park setting, is close to a shelter, has easily accessible parking, and will aesthetically improve the entrance into Morrison. Also, the City of Morrison will be providing water access for the gardeners.
The garden will allow individuals, families, businesses, schools, churches, and/or service organizations the opportunity to annually purchase a 10’x20’ plot for $20. The gardeners will then be able to plant their own gardens. They can choose to do what they would like with what they grow. Some may decide to sell items at the farmers market, donate produce to the food pantry, use for church community dinners, or take home for their families.
The Little Sprouts Educational Series incorporates educating young children on the benefits of gardening, allows them to experience gardening, embraces family togetherness, and encourages healthy eating choices. More details about the Little Sprouts Educational Series will be available soon. Participants and their families can anticipate a scavenger hunt at the local Farmer’s Market, a recipe book with delicious food, exciting educational presentations, and getting a little dirty in the “Little Sprouts” garden. The program is free for 3-8 year olds to participate. There are limited spots so please register quickly.
Registration forms will be available for the community garden and Little Sprouts Educational Series by April 1st. The forms will be located at the Morrison Community Hospital, Morrison City Hall, Sullivan’s Foods, and The University of Illinois Extension Office. Also, registration forms and program guidelines will be available on the Morrison Community Hospital website, www.morrisonhospital.com
